Kevin McKay, Rome Residency Awardee

There are not enough superlatives to describe my Rome Residency, which provided an opportunity to connect with the cultural source of the modern city and to develop my art practice. My time was wholly concerned with exploring and sketching the Eternal City, and painting in the spacious en-suite studio within an impressive home base – The British School at Rome. Here, I was privileged to engage with leading academics and artists across the dinner table, and on occasion, with other academies in Rome. The city’s rich art collections humbled and inspired and the sense of discovery that accompanied my daily excursions continues to propel me to seek the same as I explore more familiar urban environments closer to home. This awe-inspiring experience enriched me personally, helping me grow as an artist and an educator.
