First Rome Resident – Kevin McKay

Kevin McKay of Sutherland, NSW, is the winner of the inaugural William Fletcher Travelling Fellowship with Residency in the British School at Rome in April–June 2011.

The announcement was made at the exhibition of finalists’ work, National Art School, Sydney, by Barry Pearce, head curator of Australian art, Art Gallery of New South Wales (pictured).

This fellowship was made possible by a bequest from Dr M (Nick) Matheson Lines, late of Mosman.

Freeway overpasses and high-rise buildings feature in many of Kevin’s paintings. He says, “I am excited at the prospect of exploring the timeless city that first used concrete for urban development and made infrastructure a symbol of empire.”
