“In Waking Hours presents an evocative collection of Melbourne-inspired paintings from 2023 National Emerging Prize winner, Joe Whyte.

Drawing inspiration from the streets, the laneways, and the light of the inner city, it is both a love letter to Melbourne, and a poignant exploration of the connectedness and the distance which exist in urban life.

This series of intricate oil paintings explores the themes of place and our sense of belonging, with the ever-changing nature of the city reflecting the transient nature of our lives and loves.

Derived from the artist’s countless hours sketching in Melbourne’s backstreets and hidden corners, In Waking Hours serves as a time capsule of reverently observed and ultimately fleeting moments in the life of the city.”
